& WHY THEY MATTER

Poker has its own language, and understanding the terminology can make the game more enjoyable and easier to follow. This guide explains common poker terms, important concepts, and why they matter, helping you build confidence at the table and better understand the games, rules, and formats used at Aylmer Poker Club.

TOURNAMENT BASICS

Buy-Ins

HOW IT WORKS

A buy-in is the entry fee required to participate in a poker tournament. Once paid, each player receives the same starting chip stack, ensuring everyone begins on equal footing.

WHY WE DO THIS

Buy-ins create the tournament prize pool while giving every participant an equal opportunity to compete, regardless of skill level or experience.

Re-Entries

HOW IT WORKS

In Circuit events, players who have been eliminated during the late registration period have the option of re-entering the tournament. This option may only be used one time per event. A player who re-enters will be re-seeded as a new player.

WHY WE DO THIS

Allowing a re-entry option promotes the social nature of our smaller buy-in events; elimination does not need to end your night!
As proven during testing, restricting the number of re-entries to one per player very effectively protects against the possibility of buying points.

Late Registration

HOW IT WORKS

In most of our events, players may register (or re-enter) any time during the first ten (10) blind levels.
All players will receive a full stack upon registration.

WHY WE DO THIS

There are a few key reasons why we allow an extended late registration period:

it allows a more comfortable tournament structure
it accommodates a wider range of start times
it familiarizes our members with the late registration format most common in the greater poker world
it opens up a greater range of strategies
It allows us to afford a larger ratio of dealers-per-table, thereby greatly improving game quality

Event Staff

HOW IT WORKS

Each of our events are properly staffed, with a dedicated tournament director, as well as (at least) one dealer.
Unlike every local alternative, all of our poker staff are professionally trained and tested by a seasoned veteran of the poker industry.

WHY WE DO THIS

For a smooth operation with a strong focus on ethics and integrity, knowledge and experience are necessary.
Using voluntary tips from players, we compensate our staff properly so that our player base can reasonably demand performance.
We aim to break the overpowering regional trend of uneducated, aggressive, or otherwise problematic characters.

AFFORDABILITY

Discounted Buy-Ins

HOW IT WORKS

For all Circuit and Series events, as well as most Special events, players may choose to opt out of the event's prize pool.
Players who opt out of the event prize pool will only be playing for the prizes of POM, POY, and TOC.
Staff tip options will still be available, and all competitive edges will remain exactly the same as they are for players paying the full buy-in.

WHY WE DO THIS

This is part of our overall effort to accommodate players of all income and budgetary levels.
We don't want day-to-day costs to shut any of our members out of the fun.
This system does a great job of avoiding that, while also leaving strategic dynamics completely unaffected.

Satellite Qualifiers

HOW IT WORKS

These events give players the opportunity to win tournament tickets instead of cash prizes.

Those tickets can then be used to enter eligible APC events, allowing players to qualify for larger tournaments at a fraction of the regular buy-in.

WHY WE DO THIS

To make poker more affordable and accessible by giving every member a chance to compete in bigger events without paying the full entry fee. They reward skill, encourage participation, and help players build toward APC's premier tournaments regardless of their bankroll.

POINTS SYSTEM

For every buy-in made into the events of our bar league — except for the Main Event — all registered members will receive points, according to the formula shown below. These points are then used to determine the winner(s) of:

POINTS FORMULA

The formula for calculating points is:

(full buy-in cost * square root of entries) / (square root of finishing rank)

PRACTICAL EFFECT
The difference in points awarded between each pairing of finishing ranks is always larger than the pairing before it.
Simply explained, this system offers something to compete for at every moment!
